Do You Need an International Driving Permit in Armenia?

Most foreign visitors can rent and drive in Armenia on their national license, but an International Driving Permit (IDP) is a cheap and sensible backup — especially if your license isn't printed in Latin characters. Here's how it works.

Your national license and the IDP

Armenia recognizes foreign driving licenses for visitors, and rental suppliers generally accept a current national license. The catch is readability: if your license uses a non-Latin script (and isn't easily understood at the counter or by traffic police), carry an IDP, which translates your details into a standard format.

When an IDP is strongly recommended

Get an IDP before you travel if your license is in a non-Latin alphabet, if you want to avoid any debate at the rental desk, or for peace of mind if you're stopped by police. It's inexpensive, issued in your home country, and must be carried together with your original license — it doesn't replace it.

FAQs

Yes — visitors can generally drive on a valid national license. If it isn't in Latin script, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it to avoid issues at the counter or with traffic police.

From an authorized issuer in your home country (often an automobile association) before you travel — it can't be issued once you're in Armenia. Carry it together with your original license.
