Do You Need a 4×4 in Armenia?

A 4×4 isn't essential for every Armenia trip, but it transforms some of them. The answer depends on where you're going and when. Here's how to decide between an economy car, an SUV and a true 4×4.

When a 4×4 (or SUV) is worth it

Choose extra capability for rough, unpaved roads to remote monasteries and villages, high mountain routes like the Selim Pass or the slopes of Mount Aragats, and any winter driving on snowy passes. The higher clearance and grip make these drives safer and far less stressful.

  • Remote/unpaved monastery roads (parts of Syunik, Lori, Vayots Dzor)
  • High passes and alpine sites, especially out of summer
  • Winter driving anywhere in the mountains

When a normal car is fine

For the popular paved day trips — Garni and Geghard, Khor Virap, Lake Sevan, the main road to Dilijan or Areni — an economy car or sedan is perfectly comfortable in good weather. A standard SUV is a nice middle ground if you want some comfort and clearance without a full off-roader.

FAQs

Not for the main paved sights like Garni, Khor Virap and Lake Sevan, where a normal car is fine. A 4×4 or SUV is worth it for remote unpaved roads, high mountain passes and any winter driving.
