Khor Virap sits on a low hill in the Ararat Plain just 40 km south of Yerevan, close enough to the Turkish border that Mount Ararat fills the entire horizon. The monastery is where Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years before baptising Armenia into Christianity in 301 AD — making it one of the holiest sites in the country. The drive is flat and easy on any car, and sunset here, when Ararat glows pink and flocks of birds circle the ancient walls, is unforgettable.
Trip highlights
- Panoramic views of biblical Mount Ararat from the monastery walls
- Descend into the pit where Gregory the Illuminator was held captive
- One of Armenia's most sacred pilgrimage sites
- Flat, fast drive — suitable for any vehicle including economy cars
Driving tips
Time it for sunset
The late-afternoon light on Ararat is extraordinary, and tour groups thin out by 4 pm. A 40-minute drive from Yerevan makes a sunset visit very easy to plan.
